Florida is no doubt a battleground state in more ways than one. I’ll take anything we can get from this state! :stoned

Hemp is so American that it was even used to sow the first American flag. A "key Florida Senate committee" recognized Hemp’s nationalism (and benefits!) and unanimously voted 7-0 in favor of Senate Bill 902, which would legalize industrial hemp production in Florida.

Since the bill only passed the Senate Agriculture Committee, it likely will now need to pass a Senate and then House vote before reaching the governor’s desk (as is typically the case). But given the committee’s overwhelming support and the obvious moral logic behind hemp, the bill should live on. Meanwhile, a similar bill, House Bill 363, is assigned to committees and awaits its own hearing.

For Florida, a state that narrowly missed out on medical marijuana last year, the Hemp would certainly be a bittersweet one–but perhaps one that could pave the way for medical marijuana to win next time around.

Of course, discussing hemp’s legality alone is perplexing as it’s a crying shame and a nationwide crime that the non-psychoactive cousin of cannabis remains under scrutiny, and, in some states, illegal.

But as the tides continue to turn in marijuana’s favor and flood the media, hemp has quietly made moves on the legislative front. Currently, at least 13 states have legalized industrial hemp production while over 10 are actively considering making the move.

Of course, if the Industrial Hemp Farming Act that was introduced to Congress this past January becomes federal law, all of these state laws won’t really matter anymore. And Hemp will rule the world…
