Tibs, I am so sorry for your loss. Phido was a very special dog and a major part of your life. One of our great abilities in life is our capacity to remember. You have these precious memories of your best friend. Hold on and treasure them and in that way Phido will live on in your heart and mind forever. If there is anything I can do just let me know. Sorry to hear of your loss bro. I love my dogs more than i do most people i know and it always sucks to lose one of your furry family. Especially with the history that you two shared. Hopefully he’ll be waiting on the other shore for you broseph.
If at some point you decide to get another dog you should contact these folks http://vetsadoptpets.org/ . They help place service dogs and shelter animals with vets through the VA. My wifes uncle recently got to save a service dog that was going to be put down. They have since become inseparable and since he is classified and trained as a service dog, her uncle can take him almost anywhere he goes.
