Yeah, as I said in the shoutbox I’m facing two main choices for my own holiday… to get an Ouya (mainly for emulation) and a shit ton of cheap 360 and PS3 games, or to invest in a system I don’t have yet and get a Wii U (I don’t have a Wii yet, so the backwards compatibility would open up two gens of Nintendo goodness).
Now before you say that’s an easy choice, I have a strange fascination with the Ouya. When it was a Kickstarter I almost chipped in just to get one… but now there’s a $130 holiday one coming out with 32 gigs memory. Sure, there’s not a ton of great software for it as just a gaming rig… but I’d hack mine to run emulators and I’ve got ever Rom known to man. (And it’s a bitch and a half getting emus to run well or with a controller on PC) Not only that, but there’s a shit ton of cool games being worked on for it… including an unofficial follow up to Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee by the original developers. Add to that the fact you can flat out play all the games on Ouya for free BEFORE you buy, and a relatively low price point on games, and it’s very fucking attractive.
The Wii U on the other hand is just more Nintendo recycling. Sure the tablet thing is cool, but there’s what… 30 games on disc total so far? You literally HAVE to delve into Wii territory to flesh out your collection at that point… and while Sin & Punishment and a few others are must haves, the majority of the Wii library is motion control bloatware. That said, it’d be pretty cool to be able to sit and play games on the tablet while other people watch TV and shit like that. I kind of vowed I wouldn’t buy their shit unless they woke the hell up and fixed their stupidity after Gamecube died because they pissed of the 3rd party devs… and it kinda feels like I’m in an abusive relationship with Mario and Luigi taking turns smacking me around.
Overall, I’d love a Xbox One truth be told… but the launch lineup on it and the PS4 are shit. I’m not shelling out $500 for a paper weight that’ll be largely used as a remote control until Halo 5 or Fallout 4 comes out. Grrr.
So what do you guys and gals think? What consoles and games are you getting this year? What games look like they might change my mind. Inquiring minds wanna know…
I plan to sit on my PS3 and Xbox 360 for at least another year until the new units mature a bit. I’m not one to be a first adopter, really a late beta tester, and pay top dollar for the luxury (hassle!) – screw that! As you said, a ton of titles for the current generation will be cheap, and there are some new/soon to be releases I’m looking forward to – The Walking Dead:Season Two, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, etc.
That being said, if you’re set on getting a new system, the Ouya looks pretty damn cool to me. I like the concept, and they already have quite a library going. Have no experience with it though. Not much of a Nintendo fan, never have been, so I’m the wrong person to ask about that. If it were me, give me the Ouya.

Nintendo 2DS

Yezh, I been looking at those JXD handhelds too… but you gotta be careful. Some get good reviews, others seem to be horror stories… too bad that link is sold out. At that price it’s a steal.
2DS is kind of a joke online, but damn if they aint selling out on store shelves.
I’m gonna hit up Youtube for some reviews bwfore I say either way…
Oh wow. I bookmarked that yesterday and it was still good then. Those sold out FAST.

Not to go too off-topic but my biggest gaming days were about a decade ago or more, Ultima 6 was my first PC game and I spent days almost 24/7. I’ve tried some of the emulators and I see what a pain they are to get working at an acceptable pace. To get to the point these days I mostly play PC RPG when I have time like Oblivion, Risen and Dragon Age, getting bored with them even with all the mods so looking for the next thing. So not sure if a console is it for me as I won’t get the value out of it personally (the kids are out on their own now) but maybe something that I would like and could entertain guests… Any suggestions.. not really into COD and the like so it makes it tougher (waiting for the what??? comments)
I kinda lost interest in that stuff around the Quake 2 days. I’m a solitary gamer, not an online guy or MMORPG guy either.
So maybe the money goes somewhere entirely different.
Life is The realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed
Done with consoles. PC gaming only from now on.
Not buying into the console wars this time around. They can stick their planned obsolescence straight back up the poop chute that shat it out in the first place. Greedy bastards…
My Wii is a useless hunk of electronics. Bought it at the Evil Wife’s insistence, and it’s been a dust magnet ever since.
The various Chinese handheld ‘knockoff’ PSP’s are pretty cool if you’re into emulation. Last one I had was right before they went Android, loved playing all the old stuff again. Biggest thing with those is to make sure it’s capable of multi-emulation. A lot of the cheap shitty ones only do NES. Last I’d looked into it, they’d come out with a PS1 emu, but it was hella slow. I’m sure there’ve been improvements since then though.
I could definitely see the ouya as a good console for emulation to your TV…
Watch part 3 of Blunty’s review on Ouya for emulation… PS1 and N64 works brilliantly on it…
The new JXD stuff, especiall the s602b (i believe, memory is a bit foggy from 3am research last night) seems to do emulation rather well. It’s only $100 to boot.
Skyrim, Fallout 3 & Fallout New Vegas are a modders dream JustSayin. If you haven’t played them, well worth it. Mass Effect 1-3 are similarly brilliant pc RPGs.
Small wonder they could bring back the Atari 2600 and it could sell like they did a few years back. Those old games still kick=ass, glad I’m not the only one who thinks so. nostalgia sells apparently :dance

iam headed to GameStop To line up sometime after noon today for the launch at midnight!!! XBOX ONE MOFOS!! :weinerwiggle: :horns up

Okay, looked up the JXD stuff last night… you REALLY should have nabbed that 7800 when it was on sale yo… it’s the pimp daddy, and usually a hundred more. Deal Extreme does that all the time tho, so keep checking back and grab it when you see it.

Of course you might want to do your own research, especially if you pay full price. The 7300 is pretty good as well, if a bit less powerful, and $130.
Archos has a 7" tablet that’s similar for $150 if you want a more "reputable" company, but there’s a lot of people saying they konk out after a year… which is funny since the product hasn’t been out that long. (Sounds like haters who like the NVidea Shield to me) Still, that fails to include the shit ton of free games the JXDs do.
