A Pennsylvania Senator intends to introduce legislation in the coming days to reduce marijuana possession penalties.The proposed measure would make the possession of small amounts of marijuana a summary offense for a first and second offense. Under present law, possession marijuana is classified as a criminal offense, punishable by arrest, criminal prosecution, a $500 fine, up to 30 days in jail, and a criminal record. Passage of this proposed measure would reduce marijuana possession penalties to a fine only.Separate legislation to be introduced in the Senate would allow people convicted of possessing small amounts of marijuana to seek expungement of their criminal record.
