Beer lovers can freely brew their beer at home. Wine lovers can freely make their own wine.

Naturally if you grow weed for personal use in some pockets of America and the world, you’re a criminal. Oddly, one wouldn’t expect anywhere in California to be one of those pot-fearing pockets of the world.

But the Northern California county of San Joaquin County (new Fresno) sounds like it’s about to sadly and unjustly ban any form of home growing tomorrow.

At its April 7 meeting, the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the introduction of an ordinance that would ban personal cultivation of medical marijuana.

The ordinance, proposed by San Joaquin County Sheriff Steve Moore, is scheduled to be adopted by the board at an April 14 meeting.

That’s tomorrow. So this ban is essentially a sure thing.

“This is not something that has been a quick reaction to an ongoing issue,” Moore said. “This is a result of a year’s worth of interaction with the public, county staff and the board. It’s a well thought-out, well-prepared and well-planned solution that will benefit law enforcement." [Lodi News]

Banning people from medicine that safely and securely saves their lives doesn’t sound well-thought out; it sounds like prohibition at its finest. The county clings to two explanations for the ban and they’re equally outrageous:

1) San Joaquin’s Sheriff and narcotics task force says they’ve burned over 100,000 plans of weed in two years because the weed being grown wasn’t medical and thus illegal. The sheriff says that this amount of weed can’t be medical and people claiming the material is medical marijuana are lying. That may be the case, but who cares? Weed is medically legal in California and might as well be legal (or will be soon). Lame excuse.

2) Apparently lots of guns are found at grows and that makes the sheriff’s department nervous. Newsflash: growers protect their crops, and since they can’t deal with banks, they need to protect their money. That doesn’t make them murderers or criminals: it makes them people with guns in case of emergencies.

In other words, this ban is a total farce.

When states like California (…and Arizona and Nevada and a slew of others) soon inevitably make their own legalization moves, it’s of the utmost importance that legislators activists don’t forget about the real medical marijuana patients out there and leave them in a cloud of smoke.

Not allowing patients to cultivate their own medicine and the only medicine in which its ingredients and cultivation are exactly known would classify as a crime and major affront on patient rights.

If someone wants to put up six lights in his or her basement for his or her own medical purposes, he or should be allowed to do without any concern.

It’s also ironic that the San Joaquin vicinity is a huge agricultural area in Cali – boo!  :snoop:
