I know, I know, if you want privacy, don’t use Google Chrome, but there are quite a few things you can do to tighten it up (besides the obvious of disabling any call-home related functions in Settings). I’m also not going to go into things like proxies because they are usually more trouble than they are worth, I’m more focusing on plugging the holes out of which browsers regularly leak your data.
Here are the browser extensions I would recommend:
AdBlock Plus (hurr durr I know)
DoNotTrackMe
HTTPS Everywhere
MaskMe
I believe most (all?) of these are available for other browsers as well if Chrome isn’t your cup of tea.
Questions? Comments? I’m not sure about the technical prowess of other users here, but I’ve been working in the IT Sector since I could legally hold a job, so feel free to pick my brain.
Thanks, I use and like your recommended browser extensions with Firefox but would add NoScript (only available for Firefox … which is a great reason to ditch Chrome.)
I do love Firefox, but the performance of Chrome (I use a "personal" nightly Chromium build with a few patches to disable most of the call-home stuff at the source-level) keeps me coming back. And NoScript is a great addon, and one of the first I used extensively.
Don’t mind me, I just believe Google is the Antichrist:) Welcome to the forum, it will be nice having an IT guy around and I look forward to your posts.
