DarkWallet is a new trustless bitcoin wallet now in development by the group Unsystem. As shown in the video Unsystem, led by developer Amir Taaki, believes DarkWallet will bring the true anonymity to users of bitcoin that was promised, but never delivered, in the original Bitcoin protocol.

At present bitcoin is semi-anonymous. All bitcoin transactions are recorded forever in the bitcoin blockchain for any investigator to research. There are steps that any bitcoin user can take to anonymize a transaction: connecting to your bitcoin wallet only by Tor and using a mixing service to substitute someone else’s bitcoins for yours, breaking the transaction trail.

DarkWallet promises to integrate both of these steps into a web based wallet you use as a plug-in for the Firefox or Chrome browsers. Trustless bitcoin mixing will be built in to DarkWallet, and DarkWallet will also broadcast transactions from a proxy address or over the Tor network, preventing anyone from tracking a bitcoin user by IP address.
