TOR: Visit torproject.org and download the Tor Browser Bundle. Tor is free and provides good anonymity, still slower than a VPN but better than it used to be. While you are on tor get yourself a tormail account. Easy to use and free. Your ISP will know you are using Tor, should not be a problem as long as you run Tor as a client only and don’t run a relay.

Make sure to exclude known bad tor relay nodes if running tor, for details and how to visit http://xqz3u5drneuzhaeo.onion/users/badtornodes/

VPN: if you need anonymity with speed get a subscription to a paid VPN using bitcoin. Only use a VPN that allows anonymous registration, does not log IPs at all and also takes bitcoins. When you sign up for the VPN make sure you connect through Tor and use a tormail address. Easiest to use.

I2P: Tor is good, I2P is better. Faster and can be configured to a higher level of anonymity than Tor. Harder to setup than Tor and a bandwidth hog. End to end encryption (unlike Tor) and your ISP can’t tell you are using I2P. Visit i2p2.de to download the client.

Anonymity: I2P > Tor > VPN

Ease of Use: VPN > Tor > I2P

Speed: VPN > I2P > Tor

I2P can be as fast as a VPN if you are on a fast connection and can share about 2 to 5 gigabytes a day with the I2P network. On I2P the more bandwidth you share the better. Your anonymity goes up and your lag goes down.

Thanks Axa; I have the Tor browser and have been browsing Silk Road intermittently (site seems to crash a lot). Anyways, it seems less of a hassle to use Tor than a VPN.

You can say that again! VPNs are a pain in the ass to set up. That was my experience with http://btguard.com/
I’d recommend against using them if you happen to be thinking about it. Unless you know what you’re doing. They don’t provide customer service if you email them; they just tell you to look on their site.

Reminder These methods do not actually make you fully anonymous like Tor does

People could also use Incognito mode while browsing in Google Chrome by pressing CTRL+ALT+N to activate it.

Here’s how the incognito mode works:
•Webpages that you open and files downloaded while you are incognito aren’t recorded in your browsing and download histories.
•All new cookies are deleted after you close all incognito windows that you’ve opened.
•Changes made to your Google Chrome bookmarks and general settings while in incognito mode are always saved.

Tip: If you’re using Chrome OS, you can use the guest browsing feature as an alternative to incognito mode. When browsing as a guest, you can browse the web and download files as normal. Once you exit your guest session, all of your browsing information from the session is completely erased.

Or while using Firefox as your browser just use Private Browsing

As you browse the web, Firefox remembers lots of information for you: sites you’ve visited, files you’ve downloaded, and more. There may be times, however, when you don’t want other users on your computer to see this information, such as when shopping for a birthday present.

Private Browsing allows you to browse the Internet without saving any information about which sites and pages you’ve visited. This article explains what information is not saved when in Private Browsing and gives you step-by-step instructions for using it.

Warning: Private Browsing doesn’t make you anonymous on the Internet. Your Internet service provider, employer, or the sites themselves can still track what pages you visit. Private Browsing also doesn’t protect you from keyloggers or spyware that may be installed on your computer.

From the Chrome incognito browser comes this disclaimer:

"You’ve gone incognito. Pages you view in this window won’t appear in your browser history or search history, and they won’t leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer after you close all open incognito windows. Any files you download or bookmarks you create will be preserved, however.

Going incognito doesn’t affect the behavior of other people, servers, or software. Be wary of:
Websites that collect or share information about you
Internet service providers or employers that track the pages you visit
Malicious software that tracks your keystrokes in exchange for free smileys
Surveillance by secret agents
People standing behind you
Learn more about incognito browsing.
Because Google Chrome does not control how extensions handle your personal data, all extensions have been disabled for incognito windows. You can reenable them individually in the extensions manager."

I like how it reminds you to be aware of secret agents and people standing behind you lol.

Google is the greatest enemy of privacy there is. If you value your anonymity never use a Google product like gmail or chrome. Google saves everything, that is how they make money.

I am pretty sure incognito does NOT keep u anonymous. Tor  relays you IP unlike incognito.. Incognito is something u use to hide the history from your spouse, boss etc… Like if you watch porn but your wife does not approve, lol.. Hushmail is not completely safe either peeps. I believe their server is out of Canada, I used to be a member of Bookclub and there were instances where hushmail gave up the goods. If they are approached by law enforcement, they WILL cooperate.
