Toledo’s first medical-marijuana dispensary will open Monday after being certified by the Ohio Board of Pharmacy.

The Rise location at 3157 W. Sylvania Ave. was awarded its dispensary certificate of operation Wednesday by the state agency, along with one in Lorain. Rise on Thursday announced the opening dates; the Lorain dispensary will open Friday.

The approvals bring to 15 the number of dispensaries now certified under Ohio’s medical-marijuana program, including previously approved locations in Fremont and Sandusky.

“We are honored to be the first company to open up access to medical marijuana in Toledo and Lorain and be so warmly welcomed into these communities,” Ben Kovler, founder and chief executive officer of Green Thumb Industries, which owns Rise, said in a statement announcing the openings.

“Rise is focused on helping people exercise their right to wellness through meticulous customer care and a curated assortment of cannabis products that bring relief and improve the quality of daily life,” Mr. Kovler said.

The 6,000-square-foot Sylvania Avenue facility will have one-on-one consultation space and a conference room along with its retail floor. Its hours will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily except Sunday, when it will be open from noon to 5 p.m.

It and the Lorain location are two of five in Ohio for which Rise holds state permits.

Ohio law permits patients with any of 21 qualifying health conditions to obtain medical marijuana cards. According to the pharmacy board, 24,556 registered patients had recommendations in Ohio through the end of March, with 9,855 having already purchased medical marijuana products by then.

The law allows marijuana to be sold in a variety of processed forms for medical use, but it still may not be legally smoked in Ohio.
