WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A novel New Zealand law that could legalize some designer drugs is being scrutinized with interest by other countries struggling to keep up with the proliferation of "party pills" and similar products. –

"The basic prohibitionist approach doesn’t seem to be working," Wow, perhaps there are still some reasonable people in the world. As usual, someone else besides the US is leading the way, though. Always wanted to go to New Zealand…. :biggrin

We’ll have to see how that pans out, interesting if they will actually approve anything. I have a feeling the law is just there to placate people, and that getting a drug approved will prove to be an extremely uphill battle.

The first hurdle will be the prohibitive cost of getting anything approved – $1.6 million. That in itself can be a huge deterrent, but the article claims there are 10-15 applications already.

What encourages me is that I’m seeing folks in numerous countries finally admit that the concept of prohibition is fatally flawed and destined to fail. Perhaps designer drugs have finally woken them up to the reality that making MJ and other substances illegal is the direct reason that we even have designers in the first place. They have effectively created their own worst enemy. Gotta love feel good legislation that produces a multitude of unintended consequences. We shall see.
