MANALAPAN, Fla. (CBS TAMPA) — A Florida man high on methamphetamine was arrested after he “surfed†down the road, climbing atop several moving cars in an incident caught in a cellphone video recording.
Police say Jonathan Restrepo, 25, was charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief after he caused more than $1,000 damage to multiple vehicles he climbed atop and “surfed†down the street, UPI reports. Restrepo is seen in the video crawling atop a Nissan Altima as it proceeds down the road, peering inside the windows at the driver.
“He was screaming as if he were terrified that people were going to kill him and he needed help,†Joe Brogna, who filmed Restrepo on top of the car in front of him, told WPBF-TV. “He kept jumping on cars, begging people to let him in, which nobody did, fortunately.â€
The incident occurred Sunday morning on South Ocean Boulevard in Manalapan.
Restrepo jumped onto the top of several cars, including a Corvette “going 20 miles an hour, that was a convertible,†according to the man who recorded the video obtained by WPBF. One driver followed the vehicle down A1A, crawling back and forth on the top of the car, before police ultimately can be seen catching up to the man as he jumps off and runs for a grassy area off the Intracoastal Waterway.
“He was running around like a monkey with his tongue out, waving his arms in the air, jumping on top of cars,†the man who recorded the video told WPBF. “When he went to run away from the cops, he didn’t even run away from them. He ran a few feet and then ran back at them. He was really confused, just acting crazy. I’ve never seen anything like it.â€
Restrepo followed police commands to lie on the ground, where he allegedly told them he was using crystal meth and someone was chasing him.
He was taken to an area hospital after being arrested and has since been released.
