Denver-area emergency room doctors report outbreak of illness from Spice, Black Mamba
08/29/2013

DENVER – Doctors at the University of Colorado Hospital are warning about a possible bad batch of synthetic marijuana in the Denver metro area.
University Hospital said its emergency department has seen more than a dozen and a half very ill patients within the last 24 hours.

Several of the patients arrived at the emergency room unresponsive.
Each one of them was having a reaction to Spice and/or Black Mamba — two forms of synthetic marijuana, according to Dr. Rich Zane.

Zane said other emergency rooms in the Denver metro area are also seeing numerous patients with ill effects from the drugs.

Doctors say the marijuana substitutes sold under names like Spice, K2 and Black Mamba are typically made up of herbs,
mixed with a powerful synthetic chemical that mimics the effects of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

While the packaging often calls these spices "incense" and says "not for human consumption," some people still smoke it.
Officials with the Rocky Mountain Poison Control Center told 7NEWS most of the drugs have not been tested on humans
and were never meant to be ingested.

The substance was created in medical labs by a Clemson University researcher as a way to study the effects of marijuana on lab animals.
It has a different molecular structure than marijuana, but was designed to stimulate the same receptors, according to the RMPCC.

Yah I read that one last week.

I’ve tried "Evil Clown" and liked it, but I remember it being strangely strong and super duper harsh. Wonder if it’s the same company?

Speaking of that, wonder how jobs are handling these new laws.
Do they take that off of drug tests or regulate it somehow or nothing?  ???

From the original article: … said Dr. Jeffrey Sankoff, an emergency department physician at Denver Health. "The cannabinoid itself is not dangerous. The issue is that it’s been contaminated or altered with other substances."

I hear jobs still test, that not to expect a change. Don’t employers get federal funds, tax cuts or whatever for testing? If it goes legal in AR i would certainly apply to every job under the freaking sun so I could make the switch.

The story is suspect.  I could not find any other references to it, I could not find any mention of it in the usual medical sources, and the fact it appeared in several regional newspapers at the same time makes it pretty clear it is a planted story.  Must be a DEA operation thing coming up soon, as this is how they justify the sting operations.

Bad ‘Spice’ Sends Dozens To Metro Area Hospitals
August 29, 2013 7:26 PM

DENVER (CBS4)- Police believe a bad batch of “Spice” is making its way around the Denver metro area and sending dozens to the hospital.

“Spice,” “K2″ or “Black Mamba” are the names of a drug that is a form of synthetic marijuana. The drug is distributed in little packets. It can be 800 times more potent than THC the chemical in marijuana that makes you high.

Police believe that a bad batch of the synthetic drug is being spread around and has left more than 60 people in area emergency rooms. Several of those are on life support.
“They’re getting into something more dangerous, more potent than what we’ve seen in the past and these patients are getting a lot sicker,” said University Hospital toxicologist Dr. Kennon Heard.

Heard said all of the patients said they took “Black Mamba.”

Synthetic marijuana has been banned in Colorado. It’s made in underground labs so its potency and effects differ from batch to batch.
“Nobody knows what the effects are going to be until the first person uses it,” said Heard.

At University Hospital those hospitalized for using the drug are having seizures. Many are in comas and several are on life support.
Denver Health Medical Center said several patients have been admitted after they arrive screaming and violent.
“The predominant thing we see is patients completely out of control,” said Heard.

While the Drug Enforcement Administration outlawed many of the chemicals previously used to make synthetic marijuana, manufacturers are creating new ones to get around the law.
“What it seems like is somebody made a new drug and released it as this “Black Mamba,” said Heard. “I would not be surprised if we have someone who dies from using this product.”

Doctors at University Hospital are especially concerned because this weekend a Phish concert is scheduled at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park which has a reputation for attracting a pot smoking crowd.

While there are no statistics on how prevalent the drug is in Colorado the North Metro Drug Task Force said it is especially popular among high school students.
