NEW PORT RICHEY (FOX 13) –
At a glance, it looks like a container of eyedrops. But a small vial now carries the newest synthetic drug law enforcement officers are facing. It’s called "Cloud 9.”

"We know there are cases in Miami with the liquefied form. It’s in Atlanta. It’s only a matter of time, and we’re not naïve to believe it’s not here already," Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said Wednesday.

It’s already proving difficult to detect. Teens often pour the drug into energy drinks or smoke it.

"For us it’s scary, because with the liquefied form, kids over 18 can be using it with a E-cigarette. It’s very hard for law enforcement to notice," Nocco said.

The effects are devastating. It causes some users to hallucinate and suffer from paranoia and chest pains. In just two weeks, six high school students outside of Detroit have been hospitalized after ingesting the drug.

Experts say the garage-chemist concoction could very well prove deadly.

"The unknown factor makes them very dangerous. I know we’ve had deaths here in Hillsborough County from the bath salts, so that’s how dangerous they are. They can actually kill people," Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance’s Ellen Snelling said Wednesday.

Snelling says the poison is often purchased right at convenience store counters.

"It’s not out in the open as much in the convenience stores, but I have heard they’ll have it behind the counter or sometimes in a freezer," she said.

Pasco County deputies are trying to get ahead of this latest threat, before it hits the Tampa Bay area. But they can’t do it alone.

"Be nosy parents. Be involved in what your kids are doing. Go into their school bags. You have more rights than law enforcement does," Nocco said.
