I've read what the MS help page says to do, which is to move the item to the corresponding folder on PC. I only have the free 5GB that is standard on a new laptop, and I've only accessed it once, just to see how it works. Not sure if the default of the program is on when first setting up the laptop, but it immediately sucks up 5 gigs worth of stuff, and starts slapping red X's on folders (out of storage).

Anyway, I moved a video project from a OneDrive folder to a library folder on my laptop. It disappeared on OneDrive, only to show up where I wanted it: a folder on my local drive. It's now showing in my local drive folder, with a red X, but I still have plenty room on my HDD and SSD. And now, the file is also back in OneDrive, from where I moved it in the first place.

If I try to just delete a folder from OneDrive, I get the message that it will be gone from the cloud, and is not present on the physical device. Looks like, if OneDrive is running to enable me to move the data, it sucks it back up immediately and signals it's full. Is there a way to bring my files from the cloud to my physical device and then either keep certain files from syncing or just plain shut it (Sync) off?

Maybe I'm making this too complicated. I don't really care about the cloud stuff one way or the other, but I want all of my saved stuff accessible from my physical device. I think once I copied the contents of OneDrive and pasted them into their respective local folders, only to percieve duplicate everything on my local drive.

Do I need to make changes in the BIOS, other than just checking to see if the drive is recognized and listed? I'm not trying to put the master boot record on the new drive, because the only thing I really want on the SSD is the game. Game is 90GB and the new drive is 125GB. I do know that I have to change the path in the game client after I copy/paste the game folder to it. But other than that ?? HP has a thing called Smart Drive technology, probably proprietary, that is supposed to warn in advance if hard drive is predicted to fail. This thing froze up twice yesterday, and had to be hard restarted (held pwr button down for x seconds). At restart, I get an error 301, that says hard drive failure is imminent. I had to update UEFI, and I also ensured BIOS set to original defaults. Ran CHKDSK /r last night, which took a few hours, after first checking the disk using file manager via disk properties and getting the no error message. In the event log under Windows logs/Application log/wininit the log says Windows has made corrections to the file system. No further action is required.

I'm defragging the C drive now, even though it is only 2 percent fragmented. A tech video I was watching showed how the tech removed the drive giving the 301 error from the HP laptop, and put it in a different laptop, and no problems were found. He said if the disk speed falls too low, Smart Drive technology flags it as imminent failure predicted. Other possible false positives, per web search, could be caused by excessive heat, loose connection, or problems from hard impact to the laptop, but I'm pretty sure those are ruled out for me.

So, I guess I'm just looking to find out if anyone else has had this experience i.e.: This seems to be a common issue with HP but this Smart Drive tech is also HP specific. Have you seen instances of this? Even though a new 1TB drive is not all that expensive, with my budget being so tight, buying something I may not need "just in case" is something I avoid (especially so if there's nothing wrong with it).

Regardless, I suddenly see the wisdom of making that recovery disk and backing up files. Related question: Since a recovery disk can only be made once, is there anything stopping me from putting recovery on USB drive and later copying to four DVDs?

Pardon the verbosity, and thanks for any tips you could share. I gotta take a break; this thing's giving me a headache.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I found a system event number 52 in system error logs. The details refer to imminent failure and SmartDisk, but googling the same event number shows that Microsoft considers ID 52 a time sync error. MSI (Micro-Star International) put a TSSTCorp (Toshiba) drive in the model laptop I own. The drive was also designed for their line of Toshiba Satellite laptops. MSI only has the Windows 8 drivers on their site, and I can't find a TSSTcorp driver that is not dedicated to the Toshiba laptop (those won't work). I don't know if this is related as the drive still recognizes software and store bought CDs.

I read that since MS removed DVD support from their OS, I could use VLC Player https://www.videolan.org/ With VLC, I tell it to load DVD from the drive, but it can't see it and says "Please insert disc". Bottom line is I want to be able to write to disk or watch discs on the laptop. I don't know if a different app or workaround would make the drive stop selectively treating certain media like a red headed stepchild.

Here's what I have already done:

Contacted MSI Support -"Ship it to us and we'll charge you accordingly." Their customer svc is atrocious.
Contacted TSSTcorp -No response
Microsoft Support -LMAO "Buy our buggy software"

Removed upper and lower filters on the drive in the registry
Deleted from Device Mgr. both the CD Rom and the Standard SATA ACHI Controller
sfc/ scannow

Getting ready to run the cmd DISM Check/Scan/Restore health but I think it will be time consuming and fruitless.

After this long spiel, got any ideas, suggestions, sure-fire solutions? Hope so. TIA

Resources --- does anyone know of a good resource to consult?  So far my father's taking on risk to expand , loans, with no guarantees from the capitalists.

He's even taken them a prototype model with no copyright or legal ownership established,.  they could even simply claim it's theirs now?...  SMH, who knows...
