I will claim it but I am personally sick to death with the U.S.’s love affair with war and military.  It is shameful.  It is wasteful.  It is ruining a lot of good people.

It is a disgrace.

Can’t we be proud of war protesters too?  Conscientious objectors?  Almost anyone can sign up to shoot people and destroy other countries, it takes a real person of convitction to work for peace.

OK, in truth I did my part and I don’t know any conscientious objectors but making "heroes" out of people who most likely went in to the armed forces because they had no other option, to serve the industrail war machine of the U.S., to fight wars, kill untold numbers of inniocent people, destroy countries and countless lives is just insane.

The numbers of maimed and permanently crippled soldiers returning from sensless wars are becoming staggering.  It is appalling. Tens of thousands!  The wounded soldier’s lives are fucked up forever because there were no jobs or prospects of jobs at home and because someone was needed to serve the Dubyas and Obummer’s political debts.  We need to stop this madness somehow, we don’t need wars all of the time.  Yes, I know the U.S. has been in armed conflitcs somewhere almost every year since 1774, but it doesnt have to be that way, does it?  How much progress would be making toward solving cancer or unlimited energy or feeding everyone if we didn’t have a crippling military budget the size of the combined GNP of Europe?

I am glad when a soldier comes home safely and can get on with his or her life.  Brave?  yes.  Nobel? maybe.  All heroes?  no more than everyone else.  I cannot glorify war or the use of force to achieve political objectives or to keep the ruling class in power.

typos fixed.

Btw, nothing against the vets, just against the wars!! For some reason we all have to be divided and then comes clashes/wars. It’s retarded and joining the military now a days is nothing like back in the day when we were actually fighting for something!!

A U.S. soldier pleaded guilty Wednesday to executing 16 Afghan civilians — many of them women and children — and said he couldn’t explain why he did it.

His recounting of the atrocities in a military courtroom in Washington state came after he pleaded guilty to premeditated murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Bales’ lawyers have said the married father of two suffered from PTSD and brain injury after four combat deployments and was under the influence of drugs and alcohol the night of the raids on family compounds in Kandahar province.

Prosecutors have said the massacre was preplanned and that Bales was angry about a bomb blast near his outpost that wounded a fellow soldier.

Bales spoke in a clear, emotionless voice as he went through each of the 16 killings, describing how he left his base, went to the village and systematically gunned down defenseless civilians with an M4 military assault rifle and 9mm handgun.

"I formed the intent as I raised my weapon," he said.

He recounted grappling with an older woman as he entered one compound.

"Upon completion of that struggle, I did form the intent to kill anyone in that compound," he said.

Asked whether the woman was armed in way way, Bales replied, "No, sir, she was not.

He ended each chilling confession with the statement, "This act was without legal justification."

He said he did not remember setting a compound on fire, but did not dispute it. "There was a kerosene lantern in the room, and based on the evidence … that lantern was used to set those people on fire," he said. "I remember there being a lantern in the room, remember there being a fire, remember there were matches in my pocket," he added.

"But to say I remember throwing it on those people, I don’t recall that. But I have seen pictures and it’s the only thing that makes sense, sir."

The judge, Col. Jefferey Nance, asked if Bales believed he was "authorized or justified or acting in self defense" when he shot and burned the civilians. "No, sir," he replied. "Do you believe you conduct was wrong?" Nance asked. "Yes, sir," Bales replied.

You do realize the military men who go over there aren’t protecting us right? They’re sent there for other reasons and those reasons are why those people are coming here bombing us. Eye for an eye  =/    All the US military does is stick their noses in others peoples shit and invade other countries and kill innocents, no sense in joining now a days…

We (The Military) go out there and destroy other countries…. then we (The Civilians) wonder why they hate us.

We wouldn’t have to worry about ‘terrorists’ if we weren’t terrorizing the entire world ourselves.

I am totally in support of our veterans, as they are victims.

What I DO NOT support is what our country does with the military. THAT is not the soldiers’ fault, it is the fault of our government.

FSU there is a time and place for everything. This thread is not the place to sling  opinions on our military system. It is simply a way to pay tribute and thank our current members who have served in the Armed Forces, nothing more. Sling the negativity someplace else and stay out of this thread unless you served.

stop now, just stop.

If anyone here has a strong opinion on the current state of the military, make a thread about it. If you want to help honor your fellow members service to this country, then by all means post away here.
